Starting the new year at Prichard’s Distillery

I love this time of year. I’m very fortunate that our production schedules for our rums and Tennessee whiskeys are favorable for the holidays. Many distributors stock up prior to the holidays and then began replacing their inventory after the holidays have passed. This creates a small gap for us to relax and spend the holidays with our loved ones before it’s back to bottling and shipping.

We did work on our website some and added some rum cocktail recipes and whiskey cocktail recipes to our recipe pages. We also add the submit a recipe functionality. We began working on a .pdf brochure for our products and recipes. We also began distribution of a few new products including our rye whiskey and double chocolate bourbon. We are working to get those products on the website too.

We also started an advertising campaign on Facebook. We featured our Prichard’s Muddled Mojito, Ruby Prichard’s Ol’ Fashioned Eggnog and Key Lime Pie Cocktail recipes. All are made with or without one of our rum products. We will be starting a campaign featuring our whiskeys soon.

Even though we have been staying busy with those tasks, I still have taken the time to reflect on 2011. We have been very fortunate this year as our family has remained healthy and the products we introduced have been well received. It truly has been a good year. I hope your 2011 was great and 2012 tops it.

My favorite topic, Tennessee Whiskey

In 2007, after 10 years, we released our first Tennessee Whiskey. Crafted in 1997 when the distillery opened, we were eager to get this whiskey into our customers hands. I knew they would be excited as excited as I was to sample our newest release.

We distill our Tennessee Whiskey like it was done during the civil war. It’s distilled using pot stills and white corn that’s milled in Old Salem, TN. The result is a bold, rich Tennessee Whiskey that’s as smooth as they come.

We like this whiskey straight up but here are a few recommended recipes if you are so inclined.

COMMODORE

1-1/2 oz. Prichard’s Tennessee Whiskey
1 oz. Crème de Cacao
1 oz. lemon juice
Dash grenadine

Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a lemon twist.

BRAIN DUSTER

1 oz. Prichard’s Tennessee Whiskey
1 oz. Absinthe
1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1 dash bitters

Combine all ingredients in a glass mixing pint. Stir well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a grated nutmeg & black pepper.

SPA JULEP

2 oz. Prichard’s Tennessee Whiskey
3/4 oz. Prichard’s Sweet Lucy
1/4 oz. Wildflower Honey
1 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
6 mint leaves
2 dash grapefruit bitters

Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Shake well. Strain into a chilled highball glass over ice.
Garnish with a grapefruit twist & mint sprig

One of our greatest collaborations in our many years of producing Fine American Spirits has been that with the Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Company of Nashville, Tennessee. Famous for their Handcrafted, Bean-to-Bar Chocolate, natural chocolate is combined with our famous Double Barreled Bourbon in our secret process to produce this wonderful flavor experience.

We have many passions….

Most people who meet me know what I’m passionate about. Ask anyone who knows me well and they would definitely list my top 3 as rum, whiskey and American History. They would generally be correct.

I’m also very passionate about charity. When a friend told me about a local charity that serves the children of military personnel, I immediately wanted to be involved. I thought this would be a great place to solicit advocates for this great cause. Prichard’s Distillery was extremely happy to be able to sponsor A Soldier’s Child Birthday Foundation.

A Soldier’s Child has only one goal, to serve the children of military personnel. If you are able to, and feel inclined to, you can sponsor a child or a family with up to six children. You can make a donation or provide gifts for the children. The gifts will be distributed to children with parents currently deployed overseas.

Not everyone is able to send a donation or gifts to charity this season. You can still be charitable. You can donate time to your neighbors, a charitable organization or anybody in need this holiday season.

Key Lime Rum Recipes

We had a few requests for some more recipes. The key lime cocktails made with Prichard’s Key Lime flavored rum are very popular so I thought they would be good to post. They’re always a big hit at our events and functions. We hope you will enjoy them too. Let us know what you think.

Key Lime Rum Recipes

PRICHARD’S KEY LIME PIE COCKTAIL

2 oz. Prichard’s Key Lime Rum
2 tbsps sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp lime juice
1 cup crushed ice

Put all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Rim a cold squall glass by dipping rim in lime juice and then into graham cracker crumbs. Garnish with a few sprinkles of graham cracker crumbs grated lime rind.

PRICHARD’ KEY LIME RUM GREAT MOJITO

2 oz. Prichard’s Key Lime Rum
1 fresh lime (squeezed)
2 sprigs of fresh mint
Club soda

Gently press fresh mint leaves in a glass. Add ice and lime juice. Then add Key Lime Rum and splash of Club Soda as desired.

KEY LIME AND TONIC

2 oz. Prichard’s Key Lime Rum
1 slice of fresh lime (squeezed)
3 or 4 fresh mint leaves
1 sprig of fresh mint
Tonic water

Gently press fresh mint leaves in a glass. Add ice and lime. Then add Key Lime Rum and splash of tonic water as desired. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

KELSO KEY LIME MARGARITA

1 can frozen orange juice concentrate (do not add water)
1 can frozen limeade concentrate (do not add water)
2 cans (use used orange juice can) Prichard’s Key Lime Rum

Pour the mixed concentrate over ice in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Holiday Rum Drinks

Distilling has been our family profession for at least 4 generations. It probably comes as no surprise that our favorite thing about the holidays are the cocktails. For the Prichard’s, nothing says the holidays have arrived like enjoying an eggnog by the fireplace or a hot buttered rum while looking out at a fresh snow fall.

We thought it would be a good idea to share a few on here. Hopefully someone can get some use out of them. As always, we encourage you to enjoy these responsibly and we would like to remind you that the rum can be left out of these drinks.

RUBY PRICHARD’S OL’ FASHION EGGNOG

12 fresh large eggs
1-1/2 cups sugar
1 bottle of Prichards’ Fine Rum
2 quarts of whole milk
1/2 pint of whipping cream
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream

Beat eggs in a large mixing bowl until they are light. Blend in 1 ½ cups of sugar. While beating, add one half of the rum a little at a time, then cover and place in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours. A few hours before serving, add the 2 quarts of milk and the remainder of the rum alternately, a little at a time. Whip the ½ pint of whipping cream and fold it into the eggnog and ladle in the softened ice cream. When serving, sprinkle a little nutmeg on top and perhaps a little whipped cream. Mom always said, “Even people who are not fond of eggnog will love this recipe.”

CHRISTMAS PUNCH

1 bottle Prichards’ Fine Rum
4 oz. sugar syrup
4 oz. maraschino cherry juice
1 pint lemon juice
4 bottles of champagne

Blend all ingredients but champagne and let sit. Add champagne at time of serving.

PRICHARDS’ HOT BUTTERED RUM

1-1/2 oz. Prichards’ Fine Rum
1 tsp sugar syrup
1 pat of butter
1/2 tsp mixed spices (cloves, cinnamon & nutmeg)

Stir in rum, sugar and spices into mug. Fill with hot water, float butter on top and stir gently until butter is dissolved. Serve hot.
